Accidents And Deaths In The Spanish Workplace

First AidAccording to the Ministry of Labour, a total of 765 workers died in workplace accidents last year (from January to November 2009), which is 219 less than the same period in 2008 (-22.2%). Of this amount, 586 workers died while on their jobs, 21.2% lower than the same period in 2008, while 179 died on the way home from work or vice versa (“en route”), 61 less than November 2008.

In total, there were 632,240 recorded accidents, representing a decrease of 25.2% over the number of accidents recorded in 2008 (845,483 accidents). Of these, there were 562,446 accidents in the workplace and 69,794 “en route”.  Minor accidents in the workplace contributed to 557,136 recorded incidents, 26.1% less, and serious accidents accounted for 4724 cases, 27.5% less than in 2008. In the case of accidents “en route”, there were 68,444 minor accidents (-17.2%), while 1,171 were serious (-21.5%).

By industry sector, the service industry recorded 261 deaths in working hours between January and November 2009, 10.3% lower than the same period in 2008. In construction there were 158 deaths (-32.2%), in the industrial sector 109 workers died (-26.8%) and in agriculture there were 58 deaths (-18.3%). While in terms of total accidents, 294,855 accidents were registered in the service industry (-16.2%), industrial incidents amounted to 133,356 (-33.5%), accidents in construction totalled 107,203 (-39.9%) and agriculture experienced 27,032 casualties (-10.7%).
