Arrested For Driving 26km The Wrong Way
January 28th, 2010
Last night in Premia de Dalt, Barcelona, local police arrested a man who had driven for 26 kilometres in the wrong direction on the C-35, between Vidreres and Llagostera, with an alcohol level three times that permitted.
According to a report today from regional police, the incident occurred at about 2300 hours last night when the police received calls from other drivers saying that a vehicle was travelling in the opposite direction on the main road from Vidreres to Llagostera.
Local traffic police attempted to alert the driver to stop, by using sirens and lights, to which he ignored. In fact, the driver had to dodge the police vehicle to prevent a collision and then continued down the wrong lane of the adjoining C-31. The police patrol joined the C-31, in the right direction, towards Platja d’Aro, and pulled alongside the speeding car.
The officers continued with sirens and lights to no avail, eventually using the loudspeaker of the patrol car to ask the driver to stop. The driver continued to ignore the signs, despite being face to face with other vehicles, four of whom had to make evasive manoeuvres to avoid colliding head on.
Finally, the driver heeded the police’s calls and was arrested on suspicion of two road safety crimes, one for reckless driving and the other drink driving. He gave a positive result of 0.96 milligrams alcohol per litre, more than three times the rate allowed.
