Five Spanish Drivers Involved in 2010 F1 Season
February 23rd, 2010
The Virgin Racing F1 team has confirmed that the Spanish driver Andy Soucek, the current Formula 2 champion, will be their reserve driver for the upcoming 2010 Formula 1 season.
Soucek, 24, who was previouly working with the troubled Spanish team Campos Meta, will replace Alvaro Parente, a Portuguese driver whose contract with Virgin was terminated after he lost one of his main sponsors.
The Madrid born driver said “I am delighted to join Virgin Racing. This position offers me a great opportunity to get ready for Formula 1, which is obviously where my long-term ambitions reside.” Soucek will join Virgin’s current driver line-up of Timo Glock and Italy’s Lucas di Grassi.
“I am eager to learn from Timo and Lucas, and absorb as much information as possible from the technical meetings and time spent in the simulator,” said the Spanish driver, who also wanted to thank the owners of his new team, John Booth and Nick Wirth for the “trust” placed in him at this stage of his career.
The heads of the Virgin Racing team said they were “delighted” to welcome Andy Soucek, highlighting his “great potential”. “He had a very good season last year in Formula 2 and also completed a very encouraging test with Williams” said Booth.
With the arrival of Soucek, the 2010 season will now consist of five Spanish drivers, including Fernando Alonso (Ferrari), Jaime Alguersuari (Toro Rosso) and Pedro de la Rosa (Sauber), along with Ferrari test driver Marc Gene – the quintet could also be joined by Adrian Valles in the USF1 team, although that team is currently beset by economic problems and have already requested to miss the first four races of the season.
