Drunk Driving: Politician Resigns From Road Safety Committee
February 24th, 2010
A politician for the PP (Popular Party) in Valencia, Ignacio Uriarte, today announced his resignation as a member of the Spanish parliament’s Road Safety Committee, after being involved in a traffic accident last Friday where he was also found to have exceeded the legal alcohol limit.
Uriarte is the national president of New Generations, the youth wing of the PP and also serves on the National Executive of the party. A statement today confirmed Uriarte’s decision to leave the committee, and that this morning he was summoned to a trial in the Madrid courts for sentencing. Uriate was convicted of drunk driving and had his driving license revoked.
According to Uriarte, the events occurred during last Friday night when the car he was driving was involved in a “minor” collision with another vehicle in central Madrid. Although there was no damage to either of the vehicles or drivers, both were breathalysed by passing traffic police, which proved to be positive in the case of Uriarte.
According to the statement released by the PP, the current government’s main opposition, Uriate “regrets and acknowledges the events that occurred last Friday and assumes all responsibility for the matter.” In consideration of the penalty and his position, Uriate therefore asked the PP’s Congress of Deputies spokesperson, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, to remove him from his position on the Road Safety Committee.
