Seville ‘Warm Up’ For CSKA Moscow Champions League Clash
February 24th, 2010
With just a few hours before the first leg of the knockout stage of the Champions League game between CSKA Moscow and Sevilla, the Luzhniki Stadium thermometers are showing the temperature to be a few degrees above zero. According to the Russian meteorological service, the game’s kick off will take place in almost spring like conditions and no snow is expected.
The harsh Russian winter was one of the main concerns of the Seville team once they found out that their next rivals in competition would be the Moscow based team. Between Friday and Monday, Moscow had experienced extremely cold conditions and its heaviest snowfall in the last 40 years. During Seville’s training session on Tuesday afternoon temperatures has risen to just above freezing.
A Luzhniki stadium representative reported today that the artificial pitch, which will host the game, is in perfect condition. “The field is clean, the underground heating system is working well, and even if snow falls, it will melt quickly,” said the spokesman. The stadium hosted the final of the Champions League in 2008 between Manchester United and Chelsea, on that occasion UEFA ordered the replacement of artificial surface for natural turf.
It has been 52 years since Seville made the quarter finals of Europe’s premier club competition, and another plus point for them is that, due to the extreme winter temperatures, the Russian league begins in mid March and ends before Christmas, meaning that CSKA have not played any official games since early December.
