February 25th, 2010
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has today released a weather warning concerning a storm that is rapidly developing in the Atlantic and the Cantabrian Sea. The storm will result in “very strong winds” this weekend, with speeds of between 90 and 130 kilometres per hour expected, along with 6 metre high waves in exposed areas.
The storm will primarily affect the western Canary Islands and the north and north western parts of Spain. However, strong winds will also hit higher altitudes in the rest of the north and west of country and any areas open to the elements of the Atlantic sea.
According to AEMET predictions, gusts of 100 to 120 kilometres per hour will be possible in the western islands of the Canaries. At the same time, Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Central, Iberian, Pyrenees and Cantabrian mountains could see gusts of up to 130 kilometres; winds in the more sheltered areas of the rest of the northern half of peninsular will range from 90 to 100 kilometres per hour.
At sea, in areas of the Cantabrian Finisterre (the westernmost point of Spain), gale force winds will reached force 8 to 9, with possible storm force spells of up to 10 and 11, this will result in waves that can easily be expected to reach 6 meters.
The storm will first appear tomorrow night in the Canary Islands and will continue until early Sunday, the 28th of February.
