Social Network Use Grows at Astounding Rate in Spain
February 26th, 2010
According to a survey by the Association for Media Research, almost three quarters of Spanish Internet users now actively use social networks, with Facebook and Tuenti being the most popular.
The study was compiled from a survey of 36,000 internet users and revealed that nearly half of Spanish net users make daily use of these networks, with keeping in contact with friends (79.3%), hobbies (27%) and professional relationships (23.6%) being the main reasons for utilising the services.
The survey has shown a sharp decline in the use of instant messaging services, including Windows Messenger or Skype, which have fallen by 21 percent in the last two years, since many of the activities for which these programs were used are now being made through social networks.
The survey also showed that internet users generally go online to search (96%), read the latest news (90%) and view maps and directions (80%). In addition, nearly three quarters of net users are watching videos online and 65% regularly access blogs. However, the largest concern to most users was excessive advertising and also connection speed – two-thirds of internet users considering their service to be too slow.
The most used browser is still Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, although its use has declined by ten percent in the last year, mostly in favour of Mozilla Firefox, which is now utilized by more than one third of users, while the recently released Google Chrome has already garnered 7% of the market.
The survey showed that internet shopping is still in its infancy in Spain and only 30% of users surveyed have made a purchase online. Credit card payment methods are preferred by 80% of shoppers, although payment platforms such as Paypal are also gaining ground, all at the expense of the traditional methods of paying for online goods in Spain, bank transfers or payment on delivery.
