Spain’s Oldest Woman Dies at the Age of 112
February 26th, 2010
Teresa Dosaigües, considered the oldest woman in Spain, died early yesterday morning at the age of 112 years at her residential home in Monterols, Reus.
Born in 1898 in La Morera de Montsant, Teresa Dosaigües had lived through three different centuries and had just recently celebrated her 112th birthday on February the 13th, she was considered to be the oldest woman in Spain.
Dosaigües was the youngest of five brothers and at 12 years of age she went to live with her older sister in Barcelona, the city in which she got married and lived with her husband until 1947. Due to her husband’s ill health, they then moved to Cornudella de Montsant.
Soon after, she unfortunately became a widow, but continued to live unaided and alone in the same town until the age of 91. Having no children, her niece, Carme Bley, finally convinced her to move to her home in Monterols.
It was only late last year, after suffering a broken wrist, that Dosaigües was moved into the residential home. On her recent birthday, the niece, with whom she had lived for the last 20 years, said that “she had always been a healthy person and, taking into account her age, she was a very independent lady.”
