First Naturally Born Gorilla in Spain

March 5th, 2010

Snowflake Albino GorillaThe first gorilla born in captivity in Spain, whose breeding and birth has not involved any kind of human intervention, has recently taken place at Barcelona Zoo in Spain. His mother, known as Machinda, gave birth to the baby gorilla on February the 28th and he was presented to the public for the first time today.

He is the grandson of the world famous Snowflake, the only known albino gorilla, who was the most popular resident of the Zoo in Spain up until his death in November 2003. During 37 years at the zoo, Snowflake fathered 22 offspring with three different females; however all of his offspring required the assistance of zoo staff to survive.

The zoo’s animal conservation team said that this gorilla was born without needing any human assistance in birth, during the process of breeding or with any feeding. Those responsible for the Barcelona Zoo primates consider that with this birth, the gorilla was born in the exact same way that he would have been in the wild.

It is unusual for gorillas born in captivity to survive without additional assistance, and the new arrival to Barcelona Zoo is one of just a few similar ‘natural’ gorilla births that have taken place in Europe to date.
