Spanish Government Open Minded on Bullfighting Debate

March 6th, 2010

Bullfighting ArenaDeputy Prime Minister, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, today assured that the government “is always in favour of free choice rather than obligation” regarding the current debate on banning bullfighting, which has raised different responses from regions within Spain. “It’s a subject that has detractors, but also a great social support”, said De la Vega.

De la Vega gave her response when asked if it would be necessary for the government to approve any declaration that bullfighting is of cultural interest, as has been announced by the autonomous communities of Madrid, Valencia and Murcia.

She said that the opinions emerging for and against bullfighting, which have followed an initiative led by the Catalonian government to ban bullfighting, is “an example of differences that exist in our country on this issue”. According to De la Vega, there are citizens who are supporters of this event and others who are not, “and far from worrying, it should give us some satisfaction to know that we have different points of view that can live together perfectly.”

She said that from the standpoint of jurisdiction, the government “absolutely respected” both the processing of the initiative put forward by some regions in parliament to ban bullfighting, as it does the declaring of the event as cultural interest to other regions.

She also indicated that this issue “is not on the agenda of the Government at the moment” and emphasized that their “utmost concern and priority, as well as that of the vast majority of citizens, is to encourage economic recovery and put us on the path to job creation.”
