Cruz Misses Out on Historical Oscar Night
March 8th, 2010
It was a disappointing night for Penelope Cruz at the 2010 Oscars but a triumphant one for women in film, with the best director award going to a female director for the first time in the Awards’ history.
Cruz could not repeat last year’s delight when she became the first Spanish woman ever to take an Oscar. In this year’s awards, her singing performance in the musical Nine earned her a notable nomination in the category of best supporting actress, but it was not enough to beat Mo’Nique, who achieved her dream of winning a first Oscar for her performance in Precious. Precious, also won the award for best adapted screenplay for Geoffrey Fletcher.
Granada born Javier Recio was also in the running for an Oscar with The Lady and the Reaper, his short animated film was co-produced by Antonio Banderas, but lost out to Logorama. At just 28 years old, the nomination itself was a great honour to the Andalusian filmmaker.
Ultimately though, the 82nd Academy Awards was dominated by The Hurt Locker, a gritty low budget film based around the Iraq war. The Hurt Locker won best film of the year and the film’s director Kathryn Bigelow was able to write her name in film history books by becoming the first ever woman to win the Oscar for best director.
For much of the night most viewers were keeping a keen eye on the anticipated duel between Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, and Avatar, the hugely successful film directed by Bigelow’s former husband James Cameron. However, Avatar could not repeat the success of Cameron’s previous monster hit, Titanic, and in the end had to settle for three awards in technical categories, leaving Bigelow and The Hurt Locker as the big winners on the night, eventually taking home six of the nine Oscars for which it was nominated.
