Ciudad Real Seizes Social Security’s Bank Account

March 9th, 2010

Make PaymentThe town hall in Ciudad Real has placed an embargo on the bank account of the Social Security Service, in regard to them not paying Property Tax (IBI) on the building that houses the city’s ‘Hospital General’ – the owner of which is the Social Security Treasury.

In total, the debt for unpaid IBI to the city of Ciudad Real by the Social Security Treasury amounts to nearly 2.5 million euros, and applies to tax receipts for the years 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Councilman, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, said today that the amount of debt is “sufficiently large” that it cannot be ignored.

Having clarified that the property belonged to the Social Security Treasury, Rodriguez explained that he tried to solve the problem through “discussion”, but said it was not possible to reach an agreement with them. According to Rodriguez, he ordered the execution of the embargo two weeks ago in accordance with normal procedure for the collection of outstanding IBI.

Rodriguez said that that since there was no solution in the collection of the taxes, the municipal action “has been fast tracked.” The councilman said that the decision to freeze the accounts of the Treasury had not been taken solely by the council and that the City had taken “full legal advice”.

“The Social Security Treasury bank account, like that of any normal citizen, can be seized, unless it complies with its obligations,” stated Rodriguez.

Meanwhile, the Social Security Treasury has threatened to sue the person who signed the order of attachment to their bank account, an action which the Ciudad Real councilman has called “totally absurd”. In this respect, Rodríguez said that the staff member in question will receive “all the legal and personal support” that is needed from his City’s council.
