100,000 Without Power After Costa Brava Blackout
March 15th, 2010
The Generalitat (the regional government of Catalonia) said in a statement today that the blackout, that left about 100,000 people in the area of the Costa Brava without electricity until early this morning, was caused by the failure of a power line yesterday afternoon.
Sources have indicated that the power supply had been restored gradually after the electricity company, Endesa, located a breakdown in the power lines running from Tordera to Lloret de Mar, the failure primarily affecting the substations supplying Lloret de Mar y Castell d ‘Aro in Girona.
At about 21:30 last night, the supply was restored in Santa Cristina d’Aro and Sant Feliu de Guixols, while the rest of the affected residential areas, in Platja d’Aro, Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar, had their supply restored from approximately 01:30 hours, although, at that time, there were still some isolated areas to fix.
The Generalitat instigated an alert that was activated by the Civil Protection Plan of Catalonia (Procicat), this meant that, during the night, the Catalan Police and Fire Departments were strengthened in all affected areas, in anticipation of any resulting emergencies.
Apart from the main Costa Brava blackout yesterday, about 3,000 people in some country houses and estates in the counties of Gironès, Maresme, Jungle and Baix Empordà were still without power this morning.
