March 29th, 2010
Police have confirmed the arrest of a man aged 39 years old at the weekend, the man is accused of illegally imprisoning his wife for over a year in the basement of a building of Viladecans in Barcelona.
The victim, of Moroccan origin, lived in a basement in Calle Joan Fivell, Viladecans, and is thought to have only had access to a small room and a toilet, while her partner left her alone and helpless for days at a time.
The police received an anonymous call on Thursday that there was a woman who had allegedly been locked in an apartment and, upon investigating, the officers found a room that was locked with padlocks and bars where they could hear an upset woman inside.
The woman, aged 27, was quickly released and, through a police interpreter, claimed that she had been locked in the same room for over a year. She was taken to Viladecans Hospital suffering from anxiety and social services later transferred her to a temporary shelter.
The police currently have the man detained before court proceedings take place where he will be charged with the crime of false imprisonment.
