Fernando Alonso’s Thumbs Insured for €10m
April 26th, 2010
The Spanish F1 driver Fernando Alonso and Banco Santander, one of his Ferrari team sponsors, today signed a sponsorship agreement which will see the double world champion star in an upcoming advertising campaign for the Insurance Division of the bank.
As part of the collaboration, Banco Santander issued the driver a life and accident insurance policy with special coverage for his thumbs, which are now insured for the sum of 10 million euros. As with all customers that take out this policy, Alonso will also benefit from free Spanish home insurance.
The CEO of Banco Santander Commercial Banking, Enrique García Candelas, said that the agreement lasts for one year and that the Spanish driver is going to “help” improve awareness of their insurance division. “Alonso has always shown a spirit of excellence, professionalism and commitment,” praised the CEO.
“In 2010, Banco Santander wrote a new chapter with Ferrari in Formula 1 and this alliance is great news for millions of fans. The Santander brand has reinforced its investment in F-1, at a difficult time for the world economy, and chose the best possible partner. This alliance works, not only in professional terms, but also emotionally,” said García Candelas.
The general director of Insurance and Direct Banking Division at Santander, Jorge Moran, believes it is “important” for the insurance company to “emulate the winning spirit of Fernando Alonso”, who will have a policy with “specific conditions” to ensure his thumbs. “They are fundamental for driving as well as the sign of victory that we hope to see much more of, starting at Montmelo,” said Moran.
The Ferrari driver spent the day viewing the facilities of Banco Santander in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid), and after a press conference, participated in recording the first insurance advert that will be broadcast during the next Formula One Grand Prix of Spain, to be held at Montmelo in 2 weeks time, the 9th of May.
