Over 12% of Spanish Population are Foreign

According to the latest municipal census, released today by the Spanish Institute of Statistics (INE), the total population registered in Spain, as of January 1st 2010, increased 0.4 percent over 2009 to reach more than 46.9 million people, of which 5.7 million are of foreign origin.
The exact total resident population amounts to 46,951,532, representing an increase of 205,725 people in relation to 2009. Of this total, 41,242,592 are of Spanish nationality and 5,708,940 were originally from another country but now have set up permanent home in Spain, representing some 12.2% of the total population.
As a comparison, the population in Spain in 1960 was around 30.4 million. A graph of the population growth since 1960 can be seen here
