Spanish Women: “Safer on the street than in their own home”

April 30th, 2010

MurderResearch at the University of Valencia has revealed that, while in America 25% of all murders of women occur in the family home, this percentage rises to 44% in Europe, and up to 67% in Spain. The professor and director of the Reina SofĂa Central University, who presented the study, has said that “a Spanish woman is safer on the street than in her own home.”

It should be noted though that the study compared data from 44 countries, including the U.S.A, Colombia and El Salvador, where violence in the streets is much higher than in Europe or Spain, and therefore the number of deaths in the family home show a higher statistical significance. The fact is that Spain is well below average rate of female homicide, both generally and in the home. While an average of 19.14 women per million are murdered around the world, in Spain the rate is much lower, at just 5.15 per million. With regard to female murders in the home, the global rate is 6.02 per million women and stands at 3.49 in Spain.

The Valencia university study also concluded that half of all female homicides in the world are carried out with a knife and, in addition, 50% of the murderers had consumed alcohol at the time of executing the crime and 40% occurred during the separation of couples.

Figures for domestic violence in Spain are still a cause for concern though. The analysis of murders between 2000 and 2006 show that Spain is one of only six countries where the rate is currently increasing.
