Ageing Vehicles on Spanish Roads Pose a Real Danger
May 24th, 2010
According to government figures, the average passenger car circulating in Spain has an age of 9.6 years, while commercial vehicles used for transporting goods have an average age of 10.06 years.
These figures were provided to the Popular Party spokesman for the Road Safety Commission, Federico Souvirón, who requested the data in writing from the Government. The figures are based on the National Vehicle Statistics of 2008, which does not include mopeds or motorbikes.
The president of the National Association of Motor Vehicle Dealers, Repairs & Parts (Ganvam), Juan Antonio Sánchez Torres, has warned repeatedly in recent months that the increasing age of cars on the roads is a result of the economic crisis, and believes that it poses a threat to road safety. “A 15 year old car driving on the road without regular revisions is a real danger to all,” he said.
The findings have been revealed as the government comes under pressure to extend the 2000E plan, which provides a guaranteed 2000 euro saving on the purchase of a new car in Spain when scrapping a vehicle of at least 10 years of age.
