Le Mans Turns Spanish in Lorenzo’s Popcorn Hour

May 24th, 2010

Lorenzo Eating PopcornAfter a clean sweep at Jerez, Spanish riders had another sensational day in the Grand Prix of France at the Le Mans racetrack yesterday. Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) in MotoGP, Toni Elias (Moriwaki) in Moto2 and Pol Espargaro (Derbi) in 125cc, won each of their races and contributed to a total of six podiums for Spanish riders across the three categories.

In addition, Spanish motorbike riders now lead each of the world championships, with Lorenzo and Elias heading MotoGP and Moto2 respectively, while fellow countryman Nico Terol, who finished second, leads the 125cc category after the first three races of the season.

In the headlining MotoGP race, Lorenzo won at his leisure. After a clean start, he followed Valentino Rossi closely in second place before taking his opportunity to pass on the tenth lap and going on to build up a comfortable lead, eventually crossing the line alone with an impressive win over his arch rival.

After winning in Jerez at the last race meet, Mallorca born Lorenzo spontaneously dived fully clothed in a nearby lake to celebrate. Whereas, at Le mans, his win seemed much more expected – in what appeared to be a calculated celebration, soon after crossing the finishing line, a cheeky Lorenzo stopped his bike in front of a large video screen, grabbed a box of popcorn from a colleague and sat down on a beach chair to watch the remaining riders complete their race.

The key results of all races in round 3 were:
