Iberian Battle: Spain vs Portugal Tonight

June 29th, 2010

FootballAll sports fans in Spain are looking forward to tonight’s second round World Cup football match between Spain and Portugal. It is exactly two years ago to the day that Spain achieved their greatest success to date by lifting the European Championship and the team will be hoping to relive some of that glory tonight against their closest neighbours.

This is the first time that the two teams have met in the World Cup finals but in other competitions and friendlies, Spain have lost against Portugal just 5 times in 32 clashes. However, in the last ten matches, Spain have only beaten Portugal once, with three wins to Portugal and six draws – there will be no draws tonight though, it is winner takes all, with extra time and penalties available to decide the winner.

The teams have not yet been announced, but Spain has fitness issues surrounding Xavi Alonso, who has been suffering from a sprained ankle. While Portugal has positive news for their experienced midfield talisman, Deco, back from a hip injury and likely to make the starting line-up.

Kickoff is at 20:30 this evening, with the match live on telecinco and just about every bar across the country. There will be fireworks by 22:15 if Spain is victorious and progress to the quarter finals of the 2010 World Cup.
