June 30th, 2010
There was success for Spain last night, as the Spanish national football team beat Portugal 1-0 in the second round of the 2010 World Cup. The match had a TV audience of more than 13 million viewers, being shown to viewers on Telecinco, Canal Plus and C+Liga.
The free to air channel Telecinco had the lion’s share of the figures, with 12.567 million viewers and a 71.2% share of the overall television audience, while Canal Plus added another 396,000 spectators, a 2.2% share, and C+Liga received 400,000 viewers and a 2.3 % share of the audience. The World Cup has been a great success for Telecinco, the broadcaster now being ranked in first position in respect of the most viewed channels in Spain during June.
In terms of cumulative audience, nearly 20 million people in Spain tuned in at some point during the game, and yesterday’s encounter was also the most watched of the World Cup so far, the second being the previous match against Honduras – achieving 13.176 million viewers and a 71.5% share of all viewers.
Spain’s hottest property, David Villa, was the hero on the night, scoring the winning goal in which Spain dominated most of the match with some exquisite passing play. Their reward is a quarter final clash against Paraguay on Saturday evening, where a win would mean they would at least equal their best ever result in the competition, when in 1950 they finished in fourth place.
