Rain, Wind and Snow in Spain

Hurricane strength winds in the Canary Islands and forecasts of rain and snow across 35 provinces are the highlights today at the start of a week where the bad weather will spread throughout Spain. The Spanish Meteorology Agency (AEMET) has issued a red alert for the “extreme risk” in the Canary Islands due to winds of over 100 miles per hour and heavy rain.
Therefore, the Ministry of Development announced today that it has “proactively mobilized all resources to cope with the expected bad weather”.
Canary Islands authorities ordered the closure of airports and ports, pending the evolution of climatic conditions in the coming hours. The Minister of the Presidency of the Canarian Government, José Miguel Ruano, cited by Canarias7, said this morning that so far the storm has caused few serious incidents. However, in some areas, wind gusts reached 150 km per hour.
In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as the alert is less intense (orange), they will open schools. The Canary Islands in general is on yellow alert (some risk) of rainfall that could exceed 15 liters per square meter in one hour, and high coastal winds.
On the mainland, 35 provinces in 17 regions are on orange alert (significant risk) or yellow (risk) by snow, rain or extreme cold, as the thermometer reaches ten degrees below zero in Huesca.
All of Madrid will be today and tomorrow in yellow weather alert, ready for a snowy and cold couple of days. At noon, the first flakes have fallen on the capital.
The AEMET activated yellow alert throughout the region after six o’clock this evening and this will continue until nine o’clock Tuesday morning in the capital and the metropolitan area, the area south of the Heneares Corridor and the region of Vegas and all day tomorrow in the mountains.
For this week, AEMAT warns of the risk of up to six inches of snow in the mountains and two inches in the rest of the region and for the future week three inches in the mountains and four in the rest of the Community.
In the Andalusian provinces of Cadiz and Malaga, AEMET has ordered an orange alert after predictions of rain of up to 30 liters per square meter in one hour and yellow in Almeria and Granada for the same phenomenon, while in the province of Jaén snow of up to five inches deep is expected.
Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Madrid and La Rioja are on yellow alert for snow with a thickness of between two and eight inches and low temperatures down to minus six degrees in the case of Huesca, rising to temperatures down to minus ten degrees below zero.
In Albacete and Ciudad Real, AEMET has activated an orange alert due to an accumulation of snow of between 10 and 15 centimeters, while in Cuenca, Guadalajara, Toledo, Alicante, Cáceres, Lugo, Ourense, Pontevedra and Murcia, the thickness is reduced to eight centimeters. The orange alert is extended to Ceuta; in this case, precipitation can accumulate 30 liters per square meter per hour.
In Navarre and the Basque province of Alava thermometers are expected to be between at least six to eight degrees and snow in Murcia could reach two inches deep. http://thereader.es
