Spanish Woman Lays Claim to the Sun
November 29th, 2010
For the first time in five thousand million years, the Sun has an owner and it is a 49-year-old Spanish woman from Salvaterra de MiƱo in the northwest region of Galicia.
The notary who attended to Ms. Sol Angeles Duran was at first flummoxed by the claim and was forced to consult with others in his firm.
Ms Duran, however, was adamant she knows the law: “I am not stupid … there is an international agreement which states that no country may claim ownership of a planet or star but it says nothing about individuals,” she argued.
Apparently an American man made a similar legal move some years ago by laying claim to the moon and most of the planets in the solar system.
The 49-year-old, it would seem, was absolutely correct in citing the loophole and has since been issued with deeds that state she is “owner of the sun, a star of spectral G2″.
Assuming the responsibility does not go to her head, Ms Duran plan to charge for the use of the Sun and pay 50% of the proceedings to the Spanish Government, 20% to the national pension fund, 10% to research and another 10% to fighting world hunger.
And before you think this is an entirely altruistic decision aimed at boosting the Spanish economy, she intends to keep 10% for herself. Commission possibly?
