December 29th, 2010

ETASpain’s Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said on yesterday the Spanish Government won’t change “a single letter of its anti-terrorist policy” whose “trademark will be police and law strength.”

After meeting Basque Premier Patxi Lopez, Interior Councillor Rodolfo Ares and several Basque and Spanish police officials, Rubalcaba also said Spain will not change its prison policy either.

Basque and Spanish governments agreed to step up efforts and collaboration between the Spanish and Basque police forces to fight Islamic terrorism “with the same strength as with ETA”, as well as to fight gender violence.

Spain’s interior minister downplayed comments by a jailed Basque left-wing leader that the armed Basque group ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna) is prepared to renounce violence and seek independence through peaceful means.

Rubalcaba said he wants to see deeds by ETA, not promising statements by people speaking for it.

He was respondingy to comments by Arnaldo Otegi, former leader of Batasuna (a Basque nationalist political party), in written answers published in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
