Football League Matches to be Postponed
March 24th, 2011
The Spanish football league season might need an extension due to a threat by the National Professional Football League (Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional – LFP) to postpone matches next month in a dispute with the government.
The LFP says it is proceeding with a strike on the weekend of April 2-3 to protest against plans to scrap a long-standing rule that at least one match per weekend is broadcast on a free to air television station. The LFP also want guarantees about how much cash they are entitled to receive from betting and lottery revenue.
LFP, which is the organising body that runs the two main professional football leagues in Spain – the Liga BBVA and the Liga Adelante – said in a statement, “The general assembly of the first division of the LFP was informed of the lack of progress in the negotiations between the league, the government, the Sports Council and parliamentary groups and therefore reiterates its decision adopted during the last general assembly to postpone the matches that are to be played on the weekend of April 2-3″
Media reports believe that each match broadcast for free on television, rather on pay-per-view or cable, could be losing the league as much as 800 million euros in potential revenue.
