Spanish Air Traffic Strikes Officially Called Off

March 25th, 2011

Airport workers in Spain have voted today in favour of calling off the proposed strikes announced by unions early last month.

A total of 70 percent of votes from 13,000 employees were in favour of calling off the strike, with 29.7 percent of votes against and a handful of abstentions.

It puts an end to the threat of 22 days of strike action, averting huge air traffic disruption over peak holiday periods between April and August.

A preliminary agreement had been made on the 16th March between the Spanish airport operator AENA and unions, today’s vote confirms that agreement.

The agreement covers working conditions and will guarantee the number of jobs at AENA will be maintained after the government sells off 49 per cent of the company as part of its efforts to reduce the national deficit.
