Nudist Gym Opens in Spain
April 26th, 2011
According to reports by the BBC, a gym in Spain is hoping to entice new customers by offering nudist workout sessions, making it the first in the country to target naturists looking to get into shape.
Gym owner Merche Laseca said “With the crisis we noticed there were fewer people using the gym, I’m not a nudist myself, though I have no problem with it. But this initiative is about the money.”
Ms Laseca said she hit on the idea of nude exercise sessions after a survey of 600 members of the Basque Nudist Association revealed that 90 percent would be happy to exercise, as well as sunbathe, in the nude.
“We’re always interested in new activities,” Maite Vicuna, president of the Basque Naturist Association, told the BBC.
“Doing sport without clothes is natural – and much more comfy.”
However, some sceptics have voiced concerns over the safety of using exercise equipment without clothes on.
But Easy Gym has said it does provide towels for comfort and “to prevent slippage”.
Other local gym owners suggested it was not beneficial for women who needed to wear sports bras, but supporters said that if a woman doesn’t feel comfortable, she can always put on a bra but no nickers allowed!
