The Cost of Taking a Spanish Driving Test
May 25th, 2011
If you live in La Coruna and want to take your driving test you are in luck. Your wallet will not suffer as much as if you try in Gerona.
Obtaining a driving licence in Spain is not cheap. According to consumer association Facua’s latest study, on average it will cost you over 800 euros. And that is if the student is diligent and passes both the theoretical and practical tests on their first attempt. If they don’t, and further attempts are needed, then the average cost goes up to around 1,500 euros.
Of course, these figures depend on many factors, the first being the ability of each student. Average costs for the first study were calculated on the basis of a month of lectures on theory and 20 practical sessions, which would generally cover most drivers’ needs. Reducing or increasing the number of practice sessions, however, may radically change the bill, given every 45 minutes costs an average of 26 euros in Spain.
The second factor influencing the study is the differences between driving schools and cities. Facua recommends asking questions and shopping around before signing up with a driving school, but the study shows that part of the pricing policy depends greatly on the area you live in.
The study highlights La Coruna as the cheapest city to take your driving test, with an average total cost of 520 euros for a student passing all exams first try. The next most affordable place is Seville, at just over 560 euros on average, and third place is Granada, at around 575 euros.
These prices contrast greatly with the more expensive cities such as Girona, where your driving licence could cost up to 1,255 euros on average, followed by Logroño, at 1,193 euros, and Bilbao.
According to the study, Madrid comes out closer to the cheaper cities, at an average of 650 euros, while Barcelona is nearer to the most expensive, at nearly 1,000 euros on average.
