Spain Dominates UK Tourism Figures
May 27th, 2011
Results from the Experian travel quarterly review have highlighted Spain’s continuing dominance as the United Kingdom’s most sought after holiday destination.
Spain increased its lead in the rankings by growing from just over 15% of all flight searches in the last quarter, to almost 18% this quarter (February to April).
Figures show that out of the top 50 most searched for flight destinations, just under 25% of holiday locations are in Spain, with Tenerife, Malaga and Alicante leading the way by holding 3 of the top 5 spots.
Spain further stretched its lead thanks to strong searches for key destinations in the Balearic Islands, as well as for Madrid and Barcelona.
In the top 50 destinations list, Madrid jumped up to 47th place in the rankings this quarter – up 32 places from the previous quarter and making Madrid the second fastest climbing destination overall.
As well as strong flight data, car hire searches were also the highest for Spain, with a particular emphasis on car hire in the Balearic Island of Mallorca.
Expectations are that the next quarter will show even stronger results for Spain, which will be a welcome boost to the tourism industry during the peak summer months.
