Up to 2,500 km on a Litre of Petrol
June 17th, 2011
The CEU IDEA Car, an electric car with a hydrogen fuel cell designed by engineering students at the University of Valencia CEU Cardenal Herrera, has beaten the Spanish record in energy efficiency in the European competition Shell Eco-Marathon, by travelling 2,534 km on the hydrogen equivalent of a litre of petrol, and exceeding by 40% the record obtained in 2010, which was 1,802 km.
As reported by the university in a statement at the trial, which ended on Saturday at the German EuroSpeedway circuit in Lausitz, the car has shown it is capable of running on the power of a light bulb of between 22 and 50 watts.
The same sources have also indicated that using just the amount of electrical energy consumed in an evening watching TV, the CEU IDEA Car can go 283 km, or approximately the distance between Alicante and Castellón.
With this result, the Valencia University’s car stands seventh in the final standings of the competition, in which 222 teams participated, from 26 European countries, including 20 Spanish teams.
No Polluting Emissions
In the electric motor of CEU IDEA Car, pressurised hydrogen, combined with air, generates the electricity it needs to run on, without producing any polluting emissions, as the only waste produced is water.
Undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students and researchers from the University have over the past year developed the hydrogen propulsion system, to ensure that the vehicle be as efficient as possible and travel the maximum number of km with minimum energy consumption and without any pollution.
In October, the CEU IDEA Car also won the Spanish trial for green vehicles, the Solar Race of Murcia, achieving the best record of the 21 teams participating, and confirming their status as most energy efficient Spanish car.
