Madrid Gets its Own “Walk of Fame”

June 21st, 2011

Madrid’s “Street of Stars” will be Martín de los Heros and the opening, attended by famous directors and actors, will be on June 27.

The street in Madrid, Martín de los Heros, is set to become a “sidewalk with history” and a tribute to 25 famous figures of the Spanish cinema to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Film Academy. This street, home to the Renior and Golem cinemas, is to become Madrid’s Walk of Fame displaying the pavement stars of well-known film directors such as Pedro Almodovar, Alejandro Amenabar, Juan Antonio Bardem, Luis García Berlanga , Luis Buñuel, José Luis Garci, Pilar Miró, Carlos Saura, Fernando Trueba, and actors such as Imperio Argentina, Penelope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Sara Montiel, Emma Penella, Amparo Rivelles, Carmen Sevilla y Concha Velasco. Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem, Fernando Fernan Gomez, Pepe Isbert, Alfredo Landa, Toni Leblanc, Paco Rabal and Fernando Rey complete the names of the 25 stars of granite, marble and steel designed by Oscar Mariné.

The stars have been selected by the Academy Board on the occasion of its 25 years anniversary of the institution, and the names, for their contribution to Spanish cinema, give form to the tribute. One or two stars will be added each year to the pavements of Martín de los Heros. The first stars will leave their mark for posterity on the 27th of June at 19hrs, accompanied by their family and friends, in what will be the inauguration of the Street of Stars.

The mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, Alvaro Ballarin, Moncloa district councillor and initiator of this project, and Aurelio Martinez, president of state lotteries and betting, who are sponsoring the initiative, will accompany the Academy’s Presidential shortlisted three, Enrique González Macho, Marta Etura and Juddith Colell.

As reported in ABC, the initiative was inspired by the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, one of the most visited places in Los Angeles. La Calle de las Estrellas (Street of Stars) aims to be a reference point for the public and developers. This project was developed by the Ministry of the Presidency and is called “Calles de Cine” whose purpose is to enhance and promote the areas of Madrid related to the film industry.
