Jellyfish Invade the Coast at La Manga

July 22nd, 2011

A plague of jellyfish has hit the beaches of La Manga as a result of a ship accidentally tearing the safety net that the autonomous community puts up each year to contain these creatures and stop them reaching shore.

The jellyfish piled on the beaches or floating in the water of La Manga, are of all colours and sizes. The brown variety causes irritation to the skin but the white can lead to more painful stings, reports ABC.

Swimmers are angry because they cannot get in the water or stroll along the sand.

Ceuta and San Sebastian

In just two months a total of 673 swimmers have suffered jellyfish stings in the bathing areas around the Autonomous City of Ceuta, also as a result of a plague of these invertebrates that has affected this community since early summer.

The greatest number of incidents occurred in the first two weeks of July with 442 cases being recorded, followed by June with 218 stings reported and two weeks in May when 13 people were affected.

In addition, three ships sweeping the waters of San Sebastian bay have captured about 500 jellyfish which have caused over twenty incidents in the area which required medical care.
