Barcelona will continue to host the Mobile World Congress from 2012 to 2018 and has been named by the GSMA as the first Mobile World Capital.

After a search of 18 months, the GSMA announced that Barcelona has been selected as the Mobile World Capital from 2012 to 2018 and will host seven years’ of the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to mobile phones. As well as hosting the GSMA Mobile World Congress they will develop a number of other programs and activities which will run all year, benefiting not only the citizens of Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain, but also the mobile industry worldwide.

Europa Press reported that the organisation congratulated all the finalists – Barcelona, Milan, Munich and Paris – for their “excellent proposals and the enormous amount of energy and creativity they put into them.” “While all the cities that competed for the title presented very innovative and attractive proposals, in the end Barcelona demonstrated that they truly deserve the title of Mobile World Capital,” said the GSMA.

The organisation highlighted Barcelona’s successful combination of “excellent conference and exhibition facilities, infrastructure, transportation and hospitality, commitment to expanding the reach of mobility in Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain, and the strong support of public and private sectors.”

Of course, the cornerstone of the Mobile World Capital is the Mobile World Congress, and from 2013, the Mobile World Congress will be held in the new and avant-garde venue, Fira de Barcelona Gran Via. The dates for the 2013 Mobile World Congress are 25 to 28 February, 2013. The 2012 Mobile World Congress will remain in Fira de Barcelona Montjuic and will take place from 27 February to 1 March, 2012.

Beyond the Mobile World Congress, the Mobile World Capital also has two additional elements: the Mobile World Centre and the Mobile World Festival. The Mobile World Centre is made up of permanent and temporary exhibitions that fuse culture and technological innovation, facilities for the development and incubation of mobile solutions, and also retail units and hospitality suites.

The Mobile World Festival, which is targeted toward the general public, includes a number of activities such as sporting events, music and art festivals, film awards, applications, technology fairs and much more.
