Crime Rates Fall Across Spain
September 27th, 2011
The number of crimes in Spain dropped by 3.6% during 2010, when compared to the previous year. Nine out of 10 of those convicted were male, with less than 10 percent female.
One area which demonstrated an increase in convictions was deception related crimes, such as fraud, money laundering/counterfeiting and crimes against the tax and social security offices. This was blamed on a clampdown against this type of crime, but will obviously be exacerbated by the economic problems.
72.1% of total crimes were committed by Spanish nationals. The remainder were due to offenders of a foreign nationality, of which nearly 40% of those were American.
Road safety crimes represented 44.4% of the total crimes recorded, with crimes involving bodily harm (13.1%) and theft (10.1%) being the next most common.
Somewhat surprisingly, the most frequent age group of male offenders (18%) was between the age of 41 and 50 years. However, the spread was quite even (from 14 to 18%) for all age groups between 21 to 50 years for both sexes.
