Record Tourist Expenditure in 2011

Foreign tourist expenditure in Spain is at an all-time high in 2011, with average daily spend of 99 euros and an average spend per tourist of 925 euros.

Records began to be kept in 2004 and this years figures beat the previous record of 36,213.6 million euros spent by foreign tourists between January and August 2008.

Foreign tourists spent a total of 7,326 million euros in August, up 7.8%. This figure represents the largest monthly total expenditure since the survey was launched and is higher than the previous record in August 2008.

Average daily spending in August rose by 0.3% to 98 euros, while average spending per tourist fell by 1.5% to 961 euros.

French tourists spending growth in August was up 10% to 1,050 million euros, caused by both increased average spending per tourist and increased average daily spending. The increase in overall spending for French visitors was highest in the Balearic Islands, Andalusia and Catalonia.

Tourists from the United Kingdom accounted for the largest share of the market, spending 1,539 million euros, a small decline of 0.7% on the previous year.

The United States also performed well in August as the second-highest contributor to absolute growth in tourist expenditure, behind France.

Russia was listed seventh on the list of highest-spending markets and fourth in terms of its contribution to overall growth.
