Miracle Foods “Made in Spain”

October 20th, 2011

Recent studies have confirmed the anti-cancer properties of purple garlic and Valencian pomegranates.

Some of these studies were carried out by scientists at the Ramon Cajal Hospital in Madrid and the University of Castilla-La Mancha and others by researchers at the University Miguel Hernández in Elche. All are meeting in Madrid this week to participate in “Fruit Attraction”, the International Fruit and Vegetable Fair, where they will present their studies on the medicinal properties of Spanish products such as purple garlic, pomegranates and broccoli.

The event, organised by IFEMA and the Spanish Federation of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables, not only brings together a broad representation of the horticultural business (with more than 550 exhibitors), but also becomes a platform for knowledge and innovation. The research team from the Ramón Cajal Hospital and the University of Castilla-La Mancha are to unveil, at the North Convention Centre in Madrid, the details of their studies, which revealed that extract from purple garlic from Pedroñeras (in Cuenca province) inhibits invitro growth of the bacterium that causes peptic ulcers and the development of human tumour cells.

Also to be the subject of focus is the latest study from the University of Miguel Hernández in Elche on pomegranate juice, from the most prized Valencian variety, which has been found to help fight tumour development in forms of cancer such as prostate, breast, lung and colon, and has a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, and a high content of polyphenols, punicalagin and anthocyanins, which prevent cardiovascular problems.

ABC News reported that, in addition, this edition of “Fruit Attraction” is to welcome the Third European Conference on Broccoli, the “superfood ” that is grown in the southeast of the country and which reduces the risk of prostate cancer and localised tumours becoming more aggressive.
