World Leaders Congratulate Rajoy

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel and the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, along with British Prime Minister, David Cameron, have transmitted to the PP leader, Mariano Rajoy, their congratulations on his victory at the polls this past Sunday. PP sources reported on these communications, but indicated that Rajoy has yet to speak directly with the German Chancellor.
The President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, has spoken with the PP leader, and President of European Council, Herman Van Rompuy , also tried to contact him to pass on his congratulations, reported Cinco Dias.
The U.S. Ambassador in Spain, Alan Solomont, called on behalf of the American President, Barack Obama, to congratulate Rajoy on taking office as President of the Government, as is customary, and Rajoy has also received calls from the President of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez Kirchner, and the first Portuguese Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho.
The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, congratulated Rajoy and the PP for their “historic victory” via his account in the social network Twitter, saying “Now comes the grandest and most difficult task: to bring Spain out of the crisis and regain the ability to grow and create jobs”.
The President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, also congratulated Rajoy via Twitter, saying “I spoke the with President-elect of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, and congratulated him on behalf of the Colombian people for his victory in the polls”. The President of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli, also sent his “congratulations” to Rajoy via this route.
The President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, congratulated the leader of the PP by phone on Monday. Also, via his account on Twitter, Calderon has wished Rajoy “luck” and agreed “to work in close coordination,” with him.
Also from home, King Juan Carlos of Spain, the Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and the Socialist candidate for president of the Government, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, telephoned their congratulations to the leader of the PP.
