Spain’s “Smurf Village” to Remain Blue

December 22nd, 2011

Neighbours of the municipality of Júzcar in Malaga, voted on Monday in favour of preserving the characteristic colour of their homes, which has already attracted over 80,000 visitors to their hometown.

Júzcar will remain painted blue, after it was declared the world’s first official Smurf Village for the global promotion of a movie, thanks to the residents’ decision which was announced by the mayor, David Fernandez.

ABC News reported that Júzcar was catapulted into the spotlight on June 16th when the multinational company Sony chose the small Malaga town to feature as the set for the Smurfs 3D movie.

The inhabitants of this small town, nestled in the Upper Genal Valley, decided by a referendum to accept the proposal from Sony, which involved using about 9,000 kilos of blue paint to cover around 250 buildings, including the church, cemetery and the facade of the town hall, amongst others.

Fernandez indicated that so far they had recorded a total of 141 votes in favour of their town remaining blue, and only 33 against, but clarified that it is an interim result and the final result will be announced on 23rd December after the postal votes are taken into consideration, and made public by announcement on the Town Hall municipal bulletin board and on the town’s official website.

The mayor said that since Júzcar lost its original white colour and was declared the world’s first Smurf Village the municipality has had around 80,000 visitors, and also emphasised this has resulted in the generation of employment and “more freelancers and new businesses”. On the other hand he pointed out that “the break in the usual peace and tranquility” of the village has been the main argument of the people who have voted against it.
