New Earthquake Fears for Lorca

December 23rd, 2011

An earthquake with an intensity of 2.9 degrees on the Richter scale occurred at 2329 hours on Monday night, with its epicentre about six miles deep, between the Rafael Mendez hospital and the Saprelorca industrial estate in Lorca, Diario Sur reported.

Immediately, many residents jammed the phone lines of the local police stations in Puerto Lumbreras (which also felt the earthquake) and Lorca, and also the 112 emergency line in Murcia, which received about eighty calls.

Residents were calling, alarmed at the tremors felt in their homes and seeking information regarding the seriousness of the problem and advice on what to do. All received messages of reassurance. At the moment, there is no evidence that the quake caused damage of any kind. However, with the memory of the Lorca earthquakes of 11th May fresh in their minds, many residents were alarmed, and took to the streets leaving their homes.

Lorca Local Police and Municipal Emergency Services patrolled the streets of the city overnight, especially the district of San Roque, where most people felt the tremors. Some witnesses said on Monday that the shaking lasted between eight and ten seconds and that it was especially noticeable on the higher floors. Despite the low intensity of the earthquake, the 112 emergency services immediately decreed a state of pre-alert as a precaution, given that the big earthquake that destroyed the city and caused nine deaths in May, was preceded minutes earlier by other movements of less intensity.
