Amazon Sells Over a Million Kindles Each Week

January 6th, 2012

The e-commerce portal Amazon.com has reported that during the month of December their sales of new Kindle models were boosted to over one million units each week, with the Kindle Fire, Amazon’s answer to the Apple iPad, being the item most demanded by customers, followed by the Kindle Touch and the simpler version of the device.

In addition, ABC News reported that the online store said that they have registered a new record in book downloads. “During the month of December, customers bought more than a million Kindle devices a week,” said Amazon. “The new family of Kindle devices occupies the top three positions on the lists of best sellers from Amazon,” the company said in a statement.

The Kindle appears to have been the top gift this Christmas. Amazon launched new models of its “eReader” and their first “tablet” in late September, with their great litmus test being Christmas. The tablets and e-books are top of the most requested gifts and Amazon is succeeding in attracting both those markets. The company said that of these devices, the sales leader was the Kindle Fire, despite it only being available in the United States. Amazon did not give specific numbers of unit sales of its tablet, but said it has exceeded sales of the new Kindle Touch and the revamped version of the normal Kindle.

With only 13 weeks on the market, the Amazon tablet has already carved a niche in a highly competitive industry, and many have immediately chosen the Kindle Fire instead of opting for a traditional e-book. The Kindle has been Amazon’s bestseller in Spain, UK, France, Germany and Italy. In Spain the Kindle basic model went on sale on 1st January, priced at 99 euros. “We are grateful to all our customers from around the world for making this the best holiday season in history for sales of Kindle,” said founder and CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos.

In addition to their success with sales of the devices, Amazon has also had great success with selling their content. The company said that sales of e-books as gifts for Kindle devices increased by 175 percent on ‘Black Friday’ (the day after Thanksgiving Day in the United States) and Christmas Day, compared with the same days in 2010.

In particular, Amazon confirmed that Christmas Day was the day they registered the most downloads of books in the whole of Amazon’s history. Thus, it seems that users are starting to see it as normal to give their loved ones e-books, with the purchase of paper books being replaced by this new option. In Spain the Christmas season is just coming to a close and so it is possible that sales data from the national version of Amazon will continue to improve in the coming weeks.
