Facebook Generates Jobs in Spain

January 27th, 2012

The world’s largest social network is more than entertainment for its users. According to a report by Deloitte, Facebook generates 232,000 jobs in the European Union. The same study, which measures the employment and economic impact of Mark Zuckerberg’s company, said that this accounts for 15,300 million euros of the EU’s GDP and 1,400 million euros of the Spanish GDP.

So, according to this data Spain is responsible for approximately 9% of the total impact of Facebook on the economies of the EU-27 and also accounts for about 9% of the jobs.

“These are very valuable results, especially for SMEs which make up the business fabric of the European economy,” said the COO of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg, in Munich.

Deloitte explained that to make such calculations they took into account many variables such as the impact of Facebook on online advertising in each country, the creation of start-ups of applications hosted on the social network, the amount of Internet use via fixed and mobile broadband and on other devices such as tablets and smartphones, or the money invested in their own social network in Europe for salaries, buildings, equipment and suppliers.

The director of policy for the use of Facebook in Europe, Richard Allan, explained to El Pais that companies are able to gain new customers and thus be more effective, thanks to this social network. “This generates more revenue and in turn they can increase their staff. The second component is the demand of technology: we want to buy tablets and smartphones among other things, in order to be able to access Facebook on the go,” he said.

The consultant also referred to the business calculations the companies that create applications for social networking make. In a note, Facebook explains that in terms of the so-called “economy of the applications,” the social network has stimulated 1,200 jobs in Spain with an impact of 82.7 million euros. This Facebook economy, he said, has initiated 29,000 jobs and generates a value of 1,900 million euros throughout Europe.

The publication of this data coincides with the announcement, by Viviane Reding, of the new European legislation on data protection. A regulation, which toughens the current policy on privacy, and is, according to various sources, concerned over companies like Google and Facebook , which have been denounced repeatedly by users rights groups.

Facebook also took the opportunity to announce it will be offering a program of advertising incentives, worth up to five million euros in free publicity, to help SMEs to boost their business growth in the social network. They indicated that the program is intended to reach 50,000 SMEs in the EU-27.

In this context, the popular social network with 800 million users worldwide, has launched in Spain, a collaborative agreement with the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises (Cepyme). Through this, “Facebook will help SMEs to optimise the social platform to help boost growth and increase business opportunities,” they said.
