Cold Snap Heading for Malaga

February 2nd, 2012

Europe is freezing, with the wave of cold weather hitting several countries, mainly in the East, leaving many dead, according to recent reports. Temperatures plummeted to -33ºC in the Ukraine, -31ºC in eastern Bosnia and to similar figures in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria, and this drop in temperature is likely to be felt in Malaga over the weekend.

Diario Sur reported that, from Thursday, temperatures in Spain are expected to drop sharply, falling up to eight degrees in two days, and then remain low at least until Monday.

The first major cold snap affecting the province so far this season is expected to reach lows of zero to two degrees in the capital and on the coast, and even reaching as low as -4°C around Antequera and Ronda, according to initial estimates from the AEMET Meteorological Centre in Malaga. “The frosts will reach the coast,” warned the director of AEMET in Málaga, José María Sánchez Laulhé.

An air mass originating from Siberia is already wreaking havoc in northern and central Europe, with hundreds of people being hospitalised suffering from frostbite and hypothermia. In the Malaga province, the most extreme temperatures are likely to be registered during the day on Saturday.

The Agency issued on its website a special notice of adverse weather conditions, which warned of the impending cold front about to hit Spain from the northeast of the mainland, which they expect will run initially until Sunday and will bring lower temperatures than usual for this time of year.

“Especially significant is the presence of winds from the north, which will produce a wind chill factor, making it feel considerably colder than indicated by the thermometer,” says the notice. Inland, minimum temperatures in some parts are expected to drop to between -5°C and -10°C, with the maximum temperatures not exceeding 5 degrees. However, he added, “because of the nature of the continental air mass, cold and dry, no rain is expected soon.” AEMET will be closely monitoring this phenomenon throughout the week.
