February 29th, 2012
94% of Spanish family businesses believe that their sales figures will improve in 2012 or at least be the same as last year, according to the first ‘Big Spanish Family Business Barometer 2011′ conducted by the IE Business School and Signum International.
The report reveals that most family businesses questioned recognised that their business had grown in sales during the past year, and also in benefits. However, 78% of the businesses thought that Spain’s socio-economic environment in 2011 was “clearly worse” than in 2010.
El Economista reported that the environmental issues of most concern to this group of companies for their future business development, are the difficult access to credit, labour reforms, the uncertainty and difficulties arising from the international political and economic environment and the tax system.
In matters of corporate governance, 83% of the Spanish family businesses surveyed held more than six annual board meetings per year, with 67% having a board for appointments and remuneration available, more than half of the directors are independent in 22% of businesses, and 21% have more than 25% of women directors.
