Number of Spanish Households Unemployed Up 16.43%

According to the latest data from the Labour Force Survey, the number of households in Spain with all its members unemployed reached 1,833,700 in 2012, which is 258,700 more than in 2011 and represents an increase of 16.43%.

The data, released yesterday by the National Statistics Institute, also shows that the number of households with all members unemployed rose by 95,800 families in the last quarter, which is an increase of 5.51% over the previous quarter.

Also, the number of households with all members in employment fell by 511,700 in 2012, representing a drop of 5.78% over the previous year, and reached 8,334,300.

Compared to the previous quarter, the number of households with all members employed dropped by 2.20% to 187,300.

The data also notes that in Spain there are 4,460,400 households with no active member, i.e. they do not have people of working age or available for work, which is an increase of 76,000 households compared to 2011 (1.73% more), although the figure fell 0.14% compared to the previous quarter to 6,400.

The number of households with at least one active member amounted to 12,945,600 in 2012, which is 0.49% less than in 2011 and 0.46% less than in the previous quarter.

El Mundo reported that at the beginning of the crisis, in the fourth quarter of 2007, Spain had 1.9 million people looking for work, which represented 8.6% of the active population. A year ago, in late 2011, this figure had risen to 5.2 million unemployed, or 22.8%.

According to the data compiled by the National Statistics Institute, the last quarter of 2012 closed with 5,965,400 unemployed, representing 26.02% of the labour force.

Two regions have over 30% unemployment – Andalusia (31.2%) and the Canary Islands (30.9%). They are followed by Extremadura (28.5%), Murcia (26.7%) and the autonomous cities of Ceuta (29.1%) and Melilla (28.1%).

No other region has an unemployment rate higher than the national average though close to it are Valencia (25.4%), the Balearic Islands (25.2%), Castilla-La Mancha (24.4%) and Catalonia (20.5%).

The regions with less unemployment are Cantabria (15.9%), Navarra (13.8%), the Basque Country (12.6%) and Aragón (16.8%), followed by Asturias (18.9%), Galicia (18.3%), Castilla y León (17.1%), La Rioja (18.7%) and Madrid (18.5%).
